Event: Strategic Vision: America and the Crisis of Global Power
When: Mon, Apr 30 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Description: Zbigniew Brzezinski, Counselor and Trustee, Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS); and Professor of American Foreign Policy, Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University

The twenty-first century seemed destined to be the American century, but within the first decade, the stock market bubble, costly foreign interventions, and the financial catastrophe of 2008 jolted America into a sudden recognition of its systemic vulnerability. Moreover, the East’s capacity for economic growth and technological innovation prompted new anxiety about the West’s future. According to Zbigniew Brzezinski, without an America that is economically vital, socially appealing, responsibly powerful, and capable of sustaining an intelligent foreign engagement, the geopolitical prospects for the West could become increasingly grave. How ominous are the symptoms of America’s domestic and international decline and what would be the likely geopolitical consequences? What are the implications of the changing distribution of global power from West to East? What should America’s long-term geopolitical goals include in order to shape a more vital and larger West and to fruitfully engage the emerging dynamism of the East?

Zbigniew Brzezinski is counselor and trustee at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, professor of American foreign policy at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Atlantic Council. From 1977 to 1981, Brzezinski was national security adviser to President Jimmy Carter. In 1988, he was cochairman of the Bush National Security Advisory Task Force. He was also a member of the President’s Chemical Warfare Commission in 1985, the National Security Council–Defense Department Commission on Integrated Long-Term Strategy from 1987 to 1988, and the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board from 1987 to 1989. He was director of the Trilateral Commission from 1973 to 1976. He has been a member of the faculties of Columbia University and Harvard University and is the author of numerous seminal works on American foreign policy. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981. Brzezinski received a B.A. and M.A. from McGill University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

His new book, Strategic Vision: America and the Crisis of Global Power, will be available for purchase and signing following the program.

Event: Chicago Lean Startup Circle – Cofounder Speed Dating
When: Thu, May 17 3:00 am – 5:00 am
Description: Cofounder Speed Dating works just like a classic speed dating event except everyone is looking for a business partner, not a romantic relationship. Each round of speed dating will be two minutes. In the first minute of each round team builders describe their vision, skill set, and traction. In the second half of the round it is the team joiners turn to make apparent their skills, experience, and why they are a good match for the venture. Participants will have to get a ticket based on their skill set, and whether they are building or joining a team. In this way entrepreneurs will build their network, and quickly meet a variety of qualified candidates. We dont recommend picking a cofounder based on a two minute conversation, but build on a base of first impressions with follow up discussions, and meetings to find a perfect match.

Event: The Future of Archiving and Governance
When: Sat, May 19 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
Description: Over 90% of the information created in an organization is Human Information. It is generated every day across many enterprise applications ranging from messaging and content management systems to websites and customer call centers. This explosive volume growth is pressing the limits of any system which manages information. In addition, innovation is driving significant changes to our notion of business-related content, and new consumer devices within the enterprise are changing our means of collaboration: iPads are running new endpoint applications, email channels are being replaced by social media, text messaging, and mobile communications; audio, video and rich media content are now common interactive file formats.

Managing extreme volumes with archiving is only the first step towards proactive information governance. Archiving is a means of gaining control but in order to truly manage risk, extract value, as well as retain, discover and hold information for litigation and compliance purposes the next generation of solutions must go beyond storage management to understand the meaning of the human information they are storing.
In the face of the changing IT landscape, understanding what you are keeping and why, when you can delete, and delivering insight to the business from your data is the future of archiving.

Event: Changemakers: Women as Leaders
When: Sun, May 20 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
Description: The Honorable Madeleine K. Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State; Chair, Albright Stonebridge Group; Chair, Albright Capital Management LLC; The Honorable Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-Large, Global Women’s Issues, United States Department of State; Moderated by Ambassador Fay Hartog Levin, Senior Advisor, European Affairs, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs

The world’s women are too often viewed as victims of poverty and illiteracy, of violence and seemingly unbreakable cultural traditions, and for generations, women’s issues have existed on the margins of politics. Now, in a time of transformative change – from the rise of new economic powers to a growing chorus of voices against repressive regimes in the Arab world – promoting the status of women is not just a moral imperative but a strategic one. Women are essential to economic prosperity, global peace, and security. Join former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer for a discussion on the role of women leaders in the new global landscape and the promotion of women’s rights, issues, and leadership around the world.

Event: The Benefit Corporation: A Model for Innovation in “Good Business”
When: Thu, May 24 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Enter the “Benefit Corporation” (B Corp), a new corporate structure that provides the legal standing for business to make corporate social responsibility an integral part of the model, giving companies both the right and the responsibility to be “good business”. On May 24 co-founder Jay Coen Gilbert will join us in a discussion on the idea, the structure, and the recent passage of legislation through the Senate that will introduce the Benefit Corporation as a certified corporate status in Illinois.

Event: 2012 International BMA Conference
When: Wed, May 30 – Fri, Jun 1
Description: “Grow” to bring together 800 business-to-business marketing and sales leaders from across the globe in Chicago, May 30-June 1, 2012

The Business Marketing Association has opened Early Bird registration for its 2012 international conference taking place May 30-June 1, 2012, at the Swissotel in Chicago.

Themed “Grow,” the 2012 conference will follow three of BMA’s most successful and well-attended annual international conferences ever—“Unlearn” in 2009, “Engage” in 2010 and “Unleash” in 2011—and will be the single largest b-to-b marketing conference in the world in 2012.

Expected to draw as many as 800 marketing and sales leaders from as many 10 countries, the jam-packed two-day conference—running from Wednesday noon, May 30, through Friday noon, June 1—will feature 12 keynote sessions, eight breakout sessions and two evening networking events.

With “growth” being the #1 focus today of most C-suites and boards, “Grow” will explore how b-to-b marketing organizations large and small are successfully and efficiently enabling their organizations to generate growth in customer demand, sales and profitability.

BMA is strongly encouraging its members and other b-to-b marketers to invite their sales counterparts to this conference, as the conference content is being designed with both marketing and sales in mind.

“Grow” will be kicked off by Jim Stengel, the former chief marketing officer of Procter & Gamble, and author of a new book, Grow: How Ideals Power Growth and Profit at the World’s Greatest Companies, to be published in May of 2012. All attendees will receive a copy.
